Jang Keun Suk Chooses Hyoja-dong Over Gangnam
It seems the Prince of Asia Jang Keun Suk would always go for outings in fancy Gangnam, but it turns out that he′s actually a bigger fan of Hyoja-dong, a site which brings together the past and present of Seoul.
Jang Keun Suk, who is currently busy shooting the upcoming KBS2 drama Love Rain, suddenly appeared on the streets of Hyoja-dong in Seoul early February. Although the weather was freezing cold, fans fired up with his sudden appearance.
The reason Jang Keun Suk appeared in Hyoja-dong was because he was participating in a photo shoot with the fashion and lifestyle magazine @star1.
This doesn’t mean he was just pretending to be a fan of the area though, as the location of the shoot was actually chosen by Jang Keun Suk himself, to everyone’s surprise. Many believed that his dandy image didn’t fit with the somewhat old-fashioned vintage Hyoja-dong.
One official said, “Jang Keun Suk knew Hyoja-dong better than anyone else. He said he visited often because it still retained Korea’s tradition and its past but also mixed it well with the present.”
Jang Keun Suk himself said through an interview, “Whenever I feel heavy I go on a drive or walk around. Gangbuk isn’t as fancy as Gangnam, but it’s fun to walk in because it doesn’t feel like it was rushed into existence. It feels comfortable because it was made across a long period of time. I try to make time to walk around the area a few times a month.”
Hyoja-dong is one of those places. It has an old supermarket and it also has fun walls standing in the small alleyways. The leaning streetlights are fascinating, and because there’s an art gallery, you can become relaxed if you walk its streets when you have a headache. Jang Keun Suk said he enjoys this kind of ease. He added, “I think I’ll go on a trip to India if I get the chance.”
The photo spread of Jang Keun Suk in traditional Hyoja-dong can be found in the first issue of @star1, which will be released on March 21.
